Buying Baby Alpaca Clothing

Winter baby clothing needs to be very warm and yet as lightweight as possible, to allow babies to move around freely and comfortably. Alpaca wool is a great choice for baby booties, babygros and blankets as it has a very unique fibre construction. Alpaca fibres are very lustrous and silky to the touch, and are much longer and flatter than the fibres found in sheep’s wool. They have a hollow fibre construction which is very effective at storing heat yet lightweight. When baby booties are made from alpaca wool, they will be soft and warm, yet very lightweight so that your newborn can move and kick freely. They are also a great choice for slightly older babies who are starting to find their feet. Bare feet for children are generally best, but in the winter months soft baby booties are the next best thing to allow them to move their feet and experiment with their balance. Hard soles can stop them from feeling textures properly so soft woollen baby booties are great for encouraging free movement.

There are two main types of alpaca fur, Huacaya and Suri. Huacaya is more common and has a denser, fluffier fibre; Suri has a much smoother flatter fibre which produces slightly silkier knits. The finest type of alpaca is known as ‘baby alpaca’, and refers to the first coat of fur that is ever shorn from a young alpaca animal. This tends to be a lot silkier than subsequent coats which become denser with age. Baby alpaca is rarer and therefore a little more expensive, but is highly prized for its quality and feel.

Alpaca is a great fibre for baby booties and other baby clothing, as it is very strong and durable. Baby clothing has to put up with a great deal of pulling, chewing and washing, so it needs to be tough to withstand this daily treatment! Alpaca wool does not bobble or pull like other knits, and garments such as socks made from alpaca wool are much less susceptible to holes and tears than those made from sheep’s wool. Alpaca products are a great investment as they will last a very long time, and baby clothing could even be passed down to future generations once it has been outgrown! An alpaca baby blanket would make a great gift for a new mother and baby, and it will be wonderfully warm and soft to tuck in with the newborn at night. It will also be able to stand lots of tugging and washing, and can be their comforter as they grow up. A shawl can be a similarly great gift, and can also be used by mum for comfort and privacy when she is out and about and needs to breastfeed. Alpaca is a very luxurious fabric and makes great clothing for both babies and adults. It is also perfect for accessories such as gloves, scarves and hats, and with the autumn and winter fast approaching it may be worth investing in a few gifts for any mums and newborn members of the family!
